A journey into music by an old man, a clarinet and a dachshund
A journey into music by an old man, a clarinet and a dachshund
A message from Malcolm about Mannofield Music Club .....
When I retired it was my intention to fulfil a long time ambition to play the clarinet and although I enjoy the learning process progress was slow and at times frustrating and the danger of giving up was always just around the corner but I kept going and signed up with a locally sourced on-line course which gave me the confidence to continue (thank you Colin Hunter, Clarinet Companion) but alas this is no longer available and it occurred to me that there must be people like myself, retired and living in Aberdeen, with an instrument gathering dust under the stairs, on top of the wardrobe or in a cupboard and would like to share the enjoyment of learning and playing along with other older learner clarinettists.
Mannofield Music Club based in Aberdeen is a project that came into my head and is still very much in an early state of trying to form a community of retirees who have time on their hands and limited musical ambitions but would be willing to join others in a local group to enjoy playing and learning together without drawing accusatory stares at every wrong note. As a guide I would say that my own ability is probably about ABRSM grade 2 or 3 on a good day so if you too want to have some fun and make some noise I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

"I haven't understood a bar of music in my life, but I have felt it." ― Igor Stravinsky
It is my intention to upload the occasional video of me and my clarinet, air some of my thoughts and to share the joy that Lily the dachshund gives me. If as a result I encourage some of you to continue playing the clarinet whatever your level that would make me very happy. When I am asked "how's the clarinet doing" I usually reply "on a good day I sometimes get an occasional note in tune". However I have found that not everyone appreciates my music practice sessions and I sometimes banish myself to the shed.
Come and join me, help create this community specifically aimed at retired older beginner clarinettists living in the Aberdeen area.
Played a wrong note? Call it improvisation and just carry on! ―MMC motto
Clearly from reading this page it can be deduced that the clarinet is my chosen instrument of torture and I have aimed the project at older retirees in Aberdeen with a love of the clarinet as I want this to be a local group project to improve the quality of life for older people like me who have found it difficult to find an outlet for their limited musical ambitions. Why not write a comment and let me know what you think. Take me to the 'Comments' form on the contact page please.
